Vaginal HRT available from September and why this is good news for women.

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

In a landmark reclassification, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced today that from September, a 10 microgram vaginal tablet called Gina is going to be available in the UK without prescription to treat postmenopausal vaginal symptoms.

Menopause affects many women every year, but for some its symptoms can be debilitating. Three in four women experience menopause symptoms and one in four have severe symptoms. Vaginal symptoms such as dryness, soreness, itching, burning and uncomfortable sex caused by lack of oestrogen is common in postmenopausal women and these are just vaginal symptoms!. Low dose vaginal estradiol has been used since the 1990's on prescription and has a well established safety profile.

After consultation with the public, pharmacists, and other experts the MHRA decided to reclassify these tablets.

This is great news for millions of UK women who are going through menopause and experience symptoms which negatively affects their lives. A few years back women had to argue strongly and wait a year after their periods stopped before they were considered for HRT by their doctor. Even then many doctors were reluctant to prescribe HRT unless the symptoms were deemed severe. This is great news for women as it gives us more control over our bodies and puts us in control.

Various campaigns in the past few years has opened up minds and has raised awareness about the subject. To get more information about menopause and symptoms visit the links included below.
