Medical Microneedling also referred to as collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny needles to create controlled injuries in the skin, aiming to stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are the proteins that give skin its strength and elasticity. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our skin, in fact 7of our0% skin is made of collagen. We lose collagen as we age. From about the age of 20 we start to lose collagen from our skin at the rate of ~ 1% per year. By around age 50 we have probably lost 25% of our skin's collagen.

Microneedling can be used to improve a variety of skin conditions, including:

  • Acne scars

  • Enlarged pores

  • Stretch marks

  • Wrinkles

  • Sun damage

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Rosacea

  • Melasma

Microneedling is also sometimes used to improve the absorption of topical skincare products. At my clinic we use medical grade serums for our microneedling treatments. Depending on what concern we are treating we choose a suitable serum for our client.

We use an electric device with tiny needles that are attached to a pen. The depth of the needles can be adjusted depending on the desired results. We use sterile disposable needle cartridges to treat the skin.

Microneedling is usually done in a series of treatments, with each treatment spaced around 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the severity of the skin condition being treated.

Most people experience some discomfort during and after microneedling. The skin may be red, swollen, and bruised for a few days. It is important to avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks after the procedure.

Microneedling is a safe and effective procedure for most people. However, there are some risks associated with it, such as low risk of infection, scarring, and bleeding. It is important to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner to perform the procedure.

Here are some of the benefits of medical microneedling:

  • It can improve the appearance of a variety of skin conditions.

  • It is a minimally invasive procedure with a short recovery time.

  • It is relatively affordable.

  • It can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatments and chemical peels.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about microneedling:

  • The results of microneedling are not immediate. It can take several weeks or even months to see the full benefits of the procedure.

  • Microneedling is not a cure for any skin condition. It can only improve the appearance of the skin.

  • Microneedling can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. It is important to wear sunscreen every day, even after the procedure.

If you are looking for a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of your skin, microneedling may be a good option for you. Be sure to do your research and talk to us before making a decision.
